What is Oeko-Tex ® Standard 100 certification?
The Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 certification is an internationally recognized standard for textile safety. Its primary goal is to protect consumer health by ensuring that textiles are free from harmful substances. It was created to help people make more informed and safer choices when purchasing textile products.
Unlike many other labels or certifications, the Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 logo and all related visuals are strictly regulated—they cannot be used without official authorization.
This certification applies to a wide range of products, including textiles (clothing, fabrics, threads), non-textile components (like zippers and buttons), recycled materials, and even mattresses, foams, feathers, and more.
Established in 1992, it ensures that every part of a textile product—from the thread to the finished garment—has been tested to confirm that it contains no harmful substances. These tests are carried out in accredited laboratories and are designed to detect potentially dangerous substances such as dyes, heavy metals, pesticides, and other chemicals.
It's important to note that this is not a general quality label—it doesn’t guarantee durability or wash resistance—nor is it an environmental certification.
The certification is strictly controlled: it can only be used after comprehensive laboratory testing, along with a mandatory on-site inspection. Licenses must also be renewed annually to remain valid.
The Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 ensures a high level of textile safety by limiting harmful substances according to strict thresholds. It is part of a broader approach to transparency, traceability, and consumer protection, though it does notcover the full environmental or social impact of textile production.
At VALERIE C., our finished garments are not individually tested or certified Oeko-Tex® Standard 100. However, most of the fabrics we use are, allowing us to offer you safer clothing, designed without harmful substances and with your health in mind.
So, when you see the Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 label, you can trust that the garment—or at least its raw materials—is safe for your health and for those who helped make it.
