Tips and tricks for washing your clothes less often
We tend to wash our clothes after each use, but this is not always necessary. Overwashing can not only prematurely wear out fabrics, but also have a significant environmental impact. Some items, like shirts, need to be ironed to remove wrinkles, which can be a time-consuming. To reduce this task, simply space out your washes as much as possible. Here are some tips for spacing out washes while keeping your clothes fresh and flawless for longer.
1. Air your clothes after each wear
Rather than systematically throwing a garment in the laundry basket, consider airing it. Hang it on a hanger or coat rack in a well-ventilated area to eliminate odors and humidity. You can even diffuse a pleasant scent in the same room to lightly perfume your garment. For the lucky ones, if you have a clothesline, I recommend hanging the garment outside for best results.
2. Choose suitable underwear
Wearing a more fitted garment under a shirt or knit sweater helps absorb sweat and limits direct contact with the skin, reducing the need to wash the main garment. For example, at VALERIE C., we wear our bamboo rayon turtlenecks under our shirts for absolute comfort and to avoid overwashing our shirts.
3. Brush and detach immediately
A simple brushing will remove dust and small dirt, avoiding a full wash. For localized stains, use a mild stain remover and a clean cloth to clean only the affected area. For your knits, I recommend using a lint shaver once a year to remove the lint that naturally forms over time.
4. Wash smart
When it's time to wash, choose a short cycle at a low temperature or hand wash with a mild detergent. This will preserve the quality of the fabric and reduce your water and energy consumption.
5. Trust the cleaner
For jackets, coats or other delicate items, professional dry cleaning may be a more effective alternative than frequent home washing.
A gesture for your clothes and for the planet
Reducing the frequency of washing is a more respectful approach to your clothes and the environment. With these simple tips, you can keep your favorite pieces in perfect condition while reducing your ecological impact.
